This month's tablature is a simple version of the song "Big Sciota". Ever since Russ Barenberg recorded this tune with Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer on their "Skip Home and Wobble" CD, it has become a popular jam session number. This tune has been transcribed in Flatpicking Guitar Magazine twice in the past. The first was a transcription of Russ Barenberg's arrangement. Russ' transcription appeared in Volume 2, Number 3. The next time an arrangement of this tune appeared in Flatpicking Guitar Magazine was in Volume 7, Number 2. In that issue the tune was arranged and performed by Matt Arcara, the current national flatpicking champion.
Both Russ Barenberg's arrangement and Matt Arcara's arrangements may be a bit difficult for beginners, so we thought we'd provide a simpler arrangement for players who would like to learn the tune, but have trouble with the arrangements that have appeared in past FGM issues. This version was arranged and performed by Dan Miller. The recording is presented at a slow tempo for instructional purposes.
